Born in 1922, the responsibility of the family fell on young Lunkaran Das Chaudhary’s shoulders after his father passed away, when he was only 20. Though Lunkaran had a strong desire to continue with his studies, he had to give it up as he was the only son.
The small cloth business that Lunkaran inherited has today developed into a multinational conglomerate called Chaudhary Group which has business interests spread across Nepal and overseas, and in Nepal provides employment to over 5000 people.
Lunkaran Das Chaudhary is known to be a very discerning and disciplined personality. Not afraid of taking risks when neeeded, Lunkaran’s first foray into the industrial sector commenced in 1967-68 when he set up a synthetic and steel factory in Birgunj.
Not limited to the business arena, Lunkaran has also made substantial contributions in the literary and social sectors of Nepal with an academy for the development of arts and literature, and a charity hospital for the underprivileged. Greatly influenced by the works of Laxmi Prasad Devkota, he is an avid lover of literature. He is also a founding member of the Marwari Sewa Samiti, and has been associated with the Nepal Chamber of Commerce and FNCCI in various capacities.
Married in 1938 to late Ganga Devi, Lunkaran Das Chaudhary is the father of three sons and a daughter. A man who has lived his dreams through sheer perseverance and dedication… a man who has created a business legacy for his family to take forward… a man who led by example…

My father has not been able to come and receive such a prestigious award. I went and told him that the boss magazine had done this. He looked at me, smiled a little bit, closed his eyes and told me, “Son! Remember… Life is always like cycling. Till the time you peddle, you will stand. The day you stop peddling, you will fall.”
He opened his eyes and told me not to forget to take his grandchildren. And he told me to tell them to find out why he had received the award. I think my Dad received the award because he is a complete man. He set the foundation for who we are today. He carries the spirit of entrepreneurship, a deep spirituality and love for his country.
