Balance. The word conjures up many emotions, feelings, and thoughts. The balance between work and play, the balance between work and family, and the balance between passion for work and those whom you are passionate about.
My life recently fell out of balance, the scales tipped, and I was caught in a whirlwind wrapped inside a hurricane in a foreign land. My husband, the man who gives my life meaning and balance fell ill, deeply ill. However, even in one’s darkest hour, one must search for that ever illusive ray of light, and although my tunnel was inconceivably, infinitely profound my search slowly began to unveil the shadows.
Today is bittersweet. Bitter in that this is the first time in six years that I couldn’t be here at Soaltee witnessing an event I am so proud of, congratulating all the men and women who keep the wheels of commerce spinning in Nepal despite terrifying odds. Without you there are no jobs, no goods, no trade, and no balance.
Today is sweet in that the team of the boss has excelled in a world class balancing act. They have managed to walk across the Himalayas on a tight rope with poise, optimism and invigorating strength. It is their commitment to excellence which will make tonight the best Top 10 awards show ever!
Probably the most important challenge for business is the management of change. And these are times of change. However, we seem to struggle to keep our businesses alive – not because we are not competent enough, driven enough or innovative enough – but simply because the environment and political will in the country is not conducive for growth, or freedom.
the boss magazine is a commitment to the ideals of free and open markets. On the global map, Nepal is considered among the hardest places to do business. the boss was initiated as a catalyst of change – we question policies, provoke ideas and debates, generate reference material, advance ideas of individual liberty and personal responsibility, identify friends of freedom, build networks, find ways of doing business in a better way…
In many ways, much of the outcome of our work is intangible, but we are committed to change... a change towards prosperity… a change that encourages wealth creation… a change that knows that a better future awaits all if only the agents of change are allowed to soar the skies of opportunity unfettered.
May your life be in balance and may you find light in every abyss.
Until the next year,
